Fourteen Weeks Today!

GOLD EYES!

Miles eyes stayed blue for a lot longer than the other pups and I was beginning to wonder if he was going to look more like an Australian Shepard then a Greyhound. Otto's eyes were already getting dark when I got them at 5 weeks old. All the other pups eyes got dark quickly too. Miles eyes gradually got gray then kind of green but it now looks like they are going to be gold. As you can see in the pictures his ears have recovered from the bad ear week last week. I love the gold eyes. Streak's eyes are gold too.

Momma Sara still hasn't been adopted and I have to admit that I am in no hurry to see her go. It is so much fun to see a mother raise her pups in a natural way. I believe that Miles will be a better pup because of her influence. Sara still plays with the pups and has a lot of energy for 5 years old. She will run and play wrestle for an hour at a time with Miles. I didn't have Otto over to play for the last week because it is hard to watch two pups on crutches. Sara had to fill in for him and would play with Miles several times a day. She is always gentle and Miles rarely yelps. His legs have grown so much that when he stands up on his hind legs he can rest his elbows on Sara's back. Miles is 27lbs now. Otto is up to 25lbs and the other brother is 17lbs.

Watch the ear!

Mom decides enough is enough and gently pins Miles to the ground. Game over.

All that rolling in grass made me itchy.

I talked to Mel at the Birmingham Track Adoption Kennel and two of the pups were adopted by a family in Florida and are home now. The runt and one male are still at the kennel. They are supposed to go to families in Oregon and California. They have put on weight and have gotten over their skin infection and have all their hair now. The runt has a dark brindle glossy coat. The male is a lighter brindle and has a thicker fuzzier coat.

Furry Friends

These photos are from when Miles was 9 weeks old and about 15 lbs. Some of Mile's friends came over to play. A little golden mix named Roo that is a week older than Miles and Jack the Doxi (a young adult that is still a pup at heart). There is a big fenced area off the stable that the pups love to play in. Pinky my deaf Italian Greyhound supervised the pups. Pinky acts like he wants to play and has the energy to keep up with the pups but for now he still just keeps them in line with a growl or air snap if they bother him. It was a beautiful warm day so we stayed outside for a few hours. The two pups actually fell asleep in the leaves.

WOW! Under these leaves there is DIRT! You can DIG in it and it doesn't taste bad either!

A Greyhound Puppy?

Everyone thinks I am crazy except a few people that have actually owned a greyhound puppy. Even some of them think I am crazy to get a greyhound puppy. I am making the leap though and have found one to adopt. I decided to start this blog to document the fun.

My greyhound JD (Just Dog) racing name M's Wrong Dog FCh, JC, RE, CGC died from osteosarcoma (bone cancer) mid 2009. I have been looking for another big brindle guy ever since. I foster for Greyhound Crossroads so have had some great dogs come through my house during that time but none that felt right. I have even met a few pups but it took 6 months to find the right one.

I think it was January 11th, 2010 that I got a call from a friend that knew I was looking for a pup about a unplanned litter of greyhound pups that had been born in the Birmingham AL area. Several pups had died of exposure in the very cold weather before the adoption group in the area was called to help. Eight of the eleven pups survived. The biggest boy was a dark brindle with a white blaze, white feet and chest just like JD. Weirder still this pup had been born on Jan 6th which was JD's birthday! Has to be a sign! I told Mel to put my name on the pup when she called.

January 17th 2010 - Went to Birmingham to meet my new pup. He is not even 2 weeks old yet. Eyes still closed but starting to crack. I knew this pup was the one as soon as I met him. He snuggled up and tried to nurse on my face. Was still the biggest and nearly twice the size of some of the other pups. He is the piggy of the litter and definitely food motivated which will be good for obedience and rally that I do with all my dogs. He would nurse every few minutes and smack noisily. If he lost his grip he would go nuts trying to find his way to the food pushing the other pups out of his way. He doesn't whine or yelp much and seems to be a confident guy. The lady that is raising them, Jen, is doing super puppy exercises with the pups so they are quite comfortable being handled.

This is such a rare opportunity since most greyhound pups are raised on farms and not available for adoption until after their racing careers are over at 2 - 5 years old. It will be interesting to see the difference between my previous greyhounds and this one with all the early training he will get.
